Herb Profile – Parsley

February 6, 2013 Gardening Gals Uncategorized

ParsleyParsley is a hardy perennial that requires around 6 hours of sunlight a day but will tolerate partial shade.  It can be grown indoors in a sunny spot or outdoors.

Ensure the soil does not dry out and mulch well to reduce soil moisture loss.

Once Parsley sets seed, it is no longer any good for harvesting.

To harvest Parsley, cut the outermost stalks just above ground level.  This will encourage further growth.  Cutting near the top of the stalks will not encourage such vigourous regrowth.

There are 2 basic varieties – flat leaf (also known as Italian or Continental) and curly leaf (also known as Afro).

Both the leaves and stalks of Parsley are edible and can be used in sauces, soups, stews, salads and many other dishes.  It makes a fantastic garnish.
