Plant of the month – Australian Native Violet

January 11, 2012 Gardening Gals Uncategorized

Australian Native Violets are found naturally along most of the eastern and southern sides of Australia.  They do however grow well in almost all areas except for very dry situations.

This lovely groundcover grows to around 10cm in height and will spread widely in shady, moist areas.  The leaves are kidney shaped and bright green in colour and the flowers are purple and white.

You do need to take care that the plant does not invade local bushland.

The Australian Native Violet is great as a lawn substitute in damp, shady areas and also looks good in hanging baskets.  It grows well under trees and shrubs too.  Just ensure that the area is kept moist.
